Bushmeat And Simian Foaming Virus
EDM number 895 in 2003-04, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 23/03/2004.
That this House notes with concern the growing demand for illegal bushmeat and the discovery of simian foaming virus (SFV) in humans who have fed on infected ape flesh; recognises that SFV was originally detected in monkeys and the transfer to humans makes bushmeat extremely dangerous; further notes that thousands of apes, gorillas and other animals are killed in order to supply the bushmeat trade; and calls on the Government to take action against those involved in the illegal bushmeat trade in order to protect animals and human health.
