Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy
EDM number 822 in 2003-04, proposed by Nicholas Brown on 15/03/2004.
That this House welcomes the progress that has been made so far on the Government's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy; in particular welcomes the commitment from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health in the debate on 5th January that our work in this area will also cover issues such as the display of unit information and the sensible drinking message; recognises the medical case for moderation in alcohol consumption; welcomes the campaign led by National Health Service clinicians to promote a sensible drinking message; recognises the additional costs arising from alcohol related crime and disorder and the burden placed on the police and the justice system as well as on the National Health Service; and therefore calls upon the Department of Health to initiate discussion between the medical profession and the alcohol drinks industry with a view to setting the responsible drinking message across including the potential for doing this through a labelling scheme covering the display of unit information and the sensible drinking message.
