Conflict In Northern Uganda
EDM number 432 in 2003-04, proposed by Valerie Davey on 15/01/2004.
That this House deeply regrets the 17 year long war in northern Uganda, which is estimated to have claimed some 300,000 lives, caused the abduction of 20,000 children and driven over two million men, women and children into Internally Displaced Person's camps; notes the comments of United Nations Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Jan Egeland who said that it was a moral outrage that the world was doing so little for the victims of the war, especially children, and that he could not think of any other part of the world that was having an emergency on the scale of Uganda, that was getting such little attention; and calls on the Government, as a major donor to Uganda, to continue to encourage all sides to arrive at a peaceful resolution of the conflict in order to end the unspeakable suffering by the civilian population.
