Council Tax Banding
EDM number 374 in 2003-04, proposed by Harry Barnes on 07/01/2004.
That this House notes that the maximum house value for council tax purposes in Band A is ú40,000, whilst the minimum value for band D is ú320,000, which is an eight-fold distinction; further notes that council tax levels are only set at a three-fold difference over the same range; believes that these arrangements are unfair to those living in lower-banded houses, especially as Band D includes properties worth millions of pounds, whilst band A includes many properties of a very minor value; and calls for changes in the banding system in order to introduce a much greater degree of fairness.
