Ali Hassan Al-Majeed And Intelligence On Iraq
EDM number 344 in 2003-04, proposed by Harry Cohen on 05/01/2004.
That this House is aware of intelligence inadequacies in connection with the war in Iraq, including claims about weapons of mass destruction, their deployment within 45 minutes, weapons-grade uranium from Niger, and sources of intelligence linked to the opposition groups with a vested interest to exaggerate and influence rather than inform; notes that much of the UK media, in April 2002, declared that UK military action based on intelligence, had killed Ali Hassan al-Majeed, known as Chemical Ali, in Basra; further notes that it has now confirmed that Chemical Ali is alive and in US custody and that his being alive represents another failure of UK intelligence and its sources in connection with Iraq; and believes that this whole episode shows the gullibility of the press and the fallibility of intelligence.
