BEATING BOWEL CANCER'S LOUD TIE CAMPAIGN 2004

EDM number 289 in 2003-04, proposed by Norman Lamb on 15/12/2003.

That this House supports Beating Bowel Cancer's Loud Tie campaign, running from 26th to 30th January; congratulates in advance the charity on their parliamentary launch to be held on 21st January; urges honourable Members to help raise money for the charity by participating in the second annual BUPA-sponsored honourable Members Loud Tie Competition by wearing a loud tie whilst speaking on the floor of the House; realises that each year 35,600 men and women in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer, half of whom will die from this condition, resulting in 46 people dying every day; understands however that 90 per cent. of those lives could be saved if the disease was detected early enough and treated effectively; commends the charity for its work in the fight against bowel cancer by highlighting awareness of symptoms amongst the medical profession and the general public, promoting early diagnosis and encouraging open access to treatment choice; encourages the Government to undertake a comprehensive screening programme; and wishes the charity every success for the campaign and the future.

This motion has been signed by a total of 70 MPs.
