Defeat Child Poverty
EDM number 253 in 2003-04, proposed by Parmjit Dhanda on 10/12/2003.
That this House welcomes the Labour Students' campaign, Defeat Child Poverty; supports the campaign's aims of defeating child poverty through radical action, making child care available for all working parents and providing financial support that works for families and lone parents; commends Labour Students' activities on campuses across the country in encouraging debate on radical measures to achieve Government targets of halving child poverty by 2010 and taking all children out of poverty by 2020; recognises that, as part of the debate over how to go further, Labour Students is raising awareness of how much the Government has already achieved, including one million children out of poverty, a free nursery place already for every four year old and soon for every three year old and massive cash increases for children and parents; acclaims the work that students do in voluntary organisations throughout the UK including working with under-privileged children; and urges the Government to deliver the changes called for in the campaign.
