President Yasser Arafat

That this House notes with sadness the death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and extends its condolences to President Arafat's family and the Palestinian people; acknowledges that, to many, President Arafat represented the long-held dream of Palestinian independence; welcomes the recent statements of the Prime Minister, declaring his intentions to resume his efforts to revive the Middle East peace process; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take all possible measures to ensure the establishment of an independent viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, which would be a fitting legacy to President Arafat and his dream of freedom for his people.
