Priority For Public Services

EDM number 1896 in 2003-04, proposed by Harry Cohen on 09/11/2004.

That this House recalls President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 election theme 'The Great Society' which had the vision of prosperity, social improvement and civil rights reform, and was defined as a society in which poverty would be abolished, education would be available for all, peace would prevail and every man would be free to develop his potential; also recalls that this fine vision was scuppered by the cost of and opposition to the unjust war in Vietnam; notes the Prime Minister's vision for modern, reformed, well invested public services in this country, but is concerned that this could similarly be scuppered by the cost of an unpopular foreign war; so demands that continued, substantial investment in public services in this country take priority over the costs of the conflict in Iraq.

This motion has been signed by a total of 16 MPs.
