Retention Of The Royal Irish Regiment Home Service

EDM number 1783 in 2003-04, proposed by Jeffrey Donaldson on 21/10/2004.

That this House salutes the courage and professionalism of the Home Service battalions of the Royal Irish Regiment; recognises the sacrifice made by the regiment and its predecessor, the Ulster Defence Regiment, with over 300 soldiers murdered in the course of the troubles in Northern Ireland; notes that in an entirely peaceful environment the Army will continue to have a garrison strength in Northern Ireland of 5,000 soldiers; believes that the Royal Irish Regiment should continue to play an important role in contributing to the defence and security of Northern Ireland; and calls on the Government to end the speculation about the future of the regiment by confirming that the Home Service battalions will continue to form a valuable part of the Army presence in Northern Ireland.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
