World Diabetes Day, 14th November

That this House congratulates the International Diabetes Federation for organising World Diabetes Day which takes place every year on 14th November, the anniversary of the birth of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea that led to the discovery of insulin; notes that the focus for this year's worldwide event will be Diabetes and Obesity; congratulates Diabetes UK for the work they will be doing in raising awareness of diabetes around the time of the event, recognises that diabetes can be a cause of a range of other secondary conditions including diabetic retinopathy, which affects six out of 10 people with diabetes and is the most common cause of sight lost among people of working age; further notes that World Diabetes Day will be marked by member associations in over 140 countries including the UK; and further congratulates all those taking part across the world.
