Severndroog Castle And BBC Restoration Programme

EDM number 1532 in 2003-04, proposed by Clive Efford on 16/07/2004.

That this House congratulates the Severndroog Castle Preservation Trust in their success in getting their campaign recognised by the BBC Restoration programme; notes that their success stems from the determination of local people to preserve this building for future generations; recognises that Severndroog is a well-known landmark visible across the whole of London and that major landmarks in seven counties can be seen from its battlements; recalls that Severndroog was built in 1755 by the grieving widow of Sir William James to commemorate her husband's major achievement in capturing the island of Severndroog from pirates; and further notes that many Londoners will remember seeing and visiting the castle on top of Shooters Hill as children and will want to save it for families to enjoy in the future.
