Food Justice Strategies Bill
EDM number 1505 in 2003-04, proposed by Alan Simpson on 13/07/2004.
That this House notes the report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation published in 1999 that highlighted the fact that over four million people in the United Kingdom do not have reasonable access to a healthy diet; further notes reports by the Malnutrition Advisory Group that show that up to 5,000 people in each parliamentary constituency may be malnourished and that one in seven people over 65 years are malnourished or at serious risk of malnourishment; recognises that this situation can be caused by a number of factors such as inadequate income, lack of reasonable access to shops or other outlets selling healthy food and inadequate information; notes also that one of the causes of childhood obesity is inadequate access to, or information concerning, healthy food; and therefore supports the Food Justice Strategies Bill introduced by a cross party group of honourable Members on 23rd June which will require the drawing up and implementation of a national strategy to promote food justice and end food poverty and which would also help alleviate childhood obesity.
