Child Pedestrian Death Rate
EDM number 1489 in 2003-04, proposed by David Drew on 12/07/2004.
That this House deplores the fact that the UK has the fourth worst child pedestrian death rate in Western Europe; recognises the suffering of children who are injured on the road and the trauma of family and friends bereaved by the death of a child; acknowledges that 13,000 children could be saved from death or injury annually if 20 mph zones were implemented across residential areas nationwide; welcomes the launch of a child road safety campaign, Watch Out, There's A Kid About! by the national road safety charity Brake; and calls on the Government to take urgent action to save children from death and injury on the road, by introducing safety initiatives around schools including 20 mph zones, more pedestrian crossings and speed cameras by lifting current restrictions on the instalment of cameras which require four death or serious injuries before a camera can be installed.
