Compliance With International Law For Those Detained At Guantanamo Bay
EDM number 1464 in 2003-04, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 06/07/2004.
That this House notes that over 600 terrorist suspects continue, after over two years, to be detained without trial at Guantanamo Bay; further notes that six of the detainees are to be tried by military commission despite serious and widespread concerns as to whether this commission will conform with the US Constitution, the Geneva Conventions and internationally recognised standards of human rights law; welcomes the decision of the US Supreme Court in Rasul v. Bush on 28th June, confirming that Guantanamo Bay detainees have certain rights to challenge their detentions before the US courts; and calls on honourable Members of this House to petition the US Administration to accord all the Guantanamo Bay detainees full protection and rights of due process under international law, regardless of their guilt or innocence.
