Patient Choice In Mental Healthcare

That this House stresses the importance of patient choice in the care of people with mental illnesses; congratulates the Patients Association and others involved on the success of the Patient Choice, Patient Voice campaign; draws attention to the Patients Association seminar in Parliament on 11th May; welcomes the dialogue created in both this House and among the public on this issue; further draws attention to the 6 Recommendations for Choice proposed at the seminar, that people should be seen as an equal partner in their care, that patients must have access to high standards of treatment, service and care, that carers and patients must have access to high quality information about treatment and service options, that carers and patients must be involved in the decision making process, including choice of medication, that patients must be able to renegotiate medication during treatment, and that patients and carers should have access to a consultant and care coordinator with whom they can communicate and who offers the choice of talking treatment; and calls on the Government to support the Patients Association and others in the implementation of these recommendations.
