Examination Of Classics

EDM number 1434 in 2003-04, proposed by Michael Fallon on 30/06/2004.

That this House deplores the decision of the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the largest examination board, to drop Latin and Greek as an examined subject after 2006; regrets that this decision was taken without consulting schools, university classics departments or even its own subject advisory panel; notes that this will further narrow subject choice at GCSE and A-level; is concerned that this will leave the future of classics in the hands of a single examining body, OCR, and will thus especially disadvantage those state schools that prefer the AQA syllabus to that of OCR; and calls upon the AQA to reconsider.
