Public Toilet Provision
EDM number 1430 in 2003-04, proposed by Alan Meale on 30/06/2004.
That this House notes the findings of a recent survey of local authority public toilet provision carried out by the British Toilet Association (BTA) which revealed that since the Audit Commission ceased collecting data on this important provision in 2001, 18 per cent. of public toilets have closed in England and Wales; further notes that of the remaining ones, only 65 per cent. had accessible facilities, 21 per cent. provided baby changing facilities and a mere 29 per cent. remained open 12 or more hours per day; believes that such low levels of provision are unacceptable; and urges the Government to meet representatives of the main local authority organisations and the BTA to discuss ways forward to alleviate such unacceptable provision.
