Silverdale Post Office

EDM number 1400 in 2003-04, proposed by Alan Simpson on 24/06/2004.

That this House condemns the decision of the Post Office Ltd to close Silverdale post office in Nottingham despite overwhelming objections from residents on the estate; notes that the Post Office declined to look at any of the offers that were made to take over the franchise for the Silverdale post office, ignored the recommendations of Postwatch to retain the service on the estate and came up with completely inaccurate claims about bus services that might connect this isolated estate with any other post office; regrets the action of David Mills, Chief Executive of the Post Office, who refused to investigate complaints about the handling of the consultation process, referring them instead to precisely those who were being complained about; and believes that if the Post Office no longer stands by the universal service obligations it was founded on, tougher regulatory measures may be needed to protect the public interest.

This motion has been signed by a total of 16 MPs.
