Racial Attacks On Nhs Staff
EDM number 1287 in 2003-04, proposed by Roy Beggs on 26/05/2004.
That this House notes with very deep concern the high level of verbal and physical assaults perpetrated against nurses and other healthcare staff in the National Health Service, particularly those which are racially motivated; notes the historical and continued contribution of all National Health Service staff, regardless of ethnic origin or faith, to the United Kingdom's health service; further notes that it is vital that the health service fosters a safe environment and culture for both staff and patients; notes that the abuse of nursing staff worsens the already acute shortage of nurses within the National Health Service; and therefore urges the Government to deal firmly and swiftly with abuse and take whatever legal action is necessary to protect all National Health Service staff from assault and harassment.
