ALZHEIMER'S WEEK, 13th-20th JUNE 2004
EDM number 1210 in 2003-04, proposed by Tim Yeo on 17/05/2004.
That this House congratulates the Alzheimer's Society for organising Alzheimer's Awareness Week which is taking place from 13th to 20th June in Northern Ireland and 4th to 10th July in England and Wales; notes that the theme for this year is 'dementia, children and young people' which seeks to address the deep worries and needs of children who experience loved ones, often their grandparents, suffering from dementia; further notes that 750,000 people in the United Kingdom suffer from dementia generally, over 400,000 of whom suffer Alzheimer's disease itself; recognises the excellent work already done by medical professionals in identifying the biological processes of Alzheimer's but also realises, since the cause of the disease remains unknown, that much work needs still to be done; is pleased to see the Alzheimer's Society celebrate 25 years of aiding research of the disease and caring for those suffering from it; and congratulates the local branches of the Society across the country, many of which will be going into schools to raise awareness pursuant to this year's theme and others that will be using street stalls to communicate with the public and raise funds.
