Relations With Spain

EDM number 1191 in 2003-04, proposed by Chris Bryant on 13/05/2004.

That this House notes the 400th anniversary of the 18 lengthy meetings between Spain and England at Somerset House from May to July 1604 which led to the signing of the Treaty of London; further notes that despite seemingly intractable disagreements over trade, the Inquisition and the Dutch, a 'peace of fine amity and friendship' was agreed, which saw the end of the 80 Years' War; recognises the strong economic, political and personal ties between the two sovereign powers of modern Spain and the UK; acknowledges that almost one in four Britons travel to Spain on holiday every year; and looks forward to an ever-stronger friendship and alliance between our two nations.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
