National Condom Week (No. 2)

EDM number 1166 in 2003-04, proposed by Neil Gerrard on 11/05/2004.

That this House recognises the value of National Condom Week from 10th to 16th May in highlighting the importance of using barrier protection in the prevention of both sexually transmitted infection and unplanned pregnancy; thanks Durex for its continued support of the campaign, providing schools and clinics throughout the UK with resouce packs to enable them to hold their own events; regrets results from the Durex Report 2004 which show that more than a third (34 per cent.) of the 5,750 people questioned have had unprotected sex with a new partner in the last 12 months with 16 to 20 year olds taking the biggest risk (39 per cent.) and almost four in 10 British males (39 per cent.) and a third (33 per cent.) of those under 16 admitting they would sleep with a new lover even if they refused to wear a condom; and recognises that these results, along with those from the Health Protection Agency showing an increase of 20 per cent. in the number of HIV cases in the UK between 2002-03, highlight the continued need for education to improve the sexual health of the nation.

This motion has been signed by a total of 50 MPs.
