Impact Of The Eu Accession Countries On Local Authorities
EDM number 1140 in 2003-04, proposed by HELEN CLARK on 06/05/2004.
That this House expresses great concern at the impact of Government advice to local authorities that they have the power to accommodate and make travel arrangements for nationals from the eight Accession (A8) countries to the European Union to return to their countries of origin; recognises that such individuals are very unequally distributed in the United Kingdom resulting in a large potential commitment for certain local authorities for which no budgetary provision exists; supports those local authorities which have said that they cannot give any support to A8 nationals; and calls on the Government to make appropriate provision as a matter of urgency.
