World Water And Sanitation

EDM number 924 in 2002-03, proposed by Caroline Spelman on 20/03/2003.

That this House applauds the Third World Water Forum currently underway in Kyoto, Japan; notes that one billion people lack access to safe drinking water; further notes that 2.4 billion people lack basic sanitation facilities in the world and that a child dies every 15 seconds from water-borne diseases; recognises that the average fresh water supply per person will be one third smaller by 2020; congratulates the NGOs and international bodies for their work on the issues surrounding water and sanitation in this the UN International Year of Freshwater; supports the Millennium Development Goal to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015; highlights that to meet the MDG we need to deliver clean water to 350,000 people per day until 31st December 2014; and sanitation to 450,000 people per day until 31st December 2014; expresses concern that we are seriously failing to achieve these targets; and calls upon the Government to do more to reverse this worrying trend.

This motion has been signed by a total of 55 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
