Human Rights Commission

EDM number 921 in 2002-03, proposed by Ashok Kumar on 19/03/2003.

That this House welcomes the recent reports by the Joint Select Committee on Human Rights calling for a human rights commission to protect and promote human rights throughout the United Kingdom; recognises that the Committee's report highlights areas not covered by existing equality commissions, such as discrimination based on age and sexuality; and calls on the Government to welcome the report and work with the Committee to implement and develop its recommendations as a recognition that a human rights culture needs not only legislation but promotion and scrutiny to succeed.
