The Convention Of The Future Of Europe And The World

EDM number 895 in 2002-03, proposed by Tony Colman on 14/03/2003.

That this House notes the rapid process in drafting a constitution for Europe by the Convention on the Future of Europe; recognises that the European Union and its member states have an enormous impact on the world, particularly the 50 per cent. of world population who live on less than ú2 a day; acknowledges that the Union and nations of Europe have a major responsibility in the United Nations and other multilateral institutions; calls upon the United Kingdom representatives to the Convention on the Future of Europe to ensure that the Constitution for Europe is founded on a recognition of the interdependence of the world's people, the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and Millennium Declaration, and democratic accountability and transparency, as called for by Charter 99's Open Letter on Europe in the World; and further urges the Convention to consider seriously the additions proposed for the draft constitution.
