Sugar Overload Disorder (Syndrome X)
EDM number 830 in 2002-03, proposed by David Tredinnick on 05/03/2003.
That this House welcomes work by researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University into syndrome X; notes the estimates which show that one in five Britons suffer from syndrome X, also known as sugar overload disorder or metabolic syndrome; further notes that syndrome X can lead to Type II diabetes and is characterised by symptoms of raised blood pressure or blood sugar, high levels of triglycerides, excess weight around the middle and low levels of protective cholesterol; expresses concern that people with syndrome X are almost three times as likely to develop heart disease than other people and that it doubles the risk of an early death from heart attack or stroke; considers that it is largely preventable and can be reversed or halted with exercise and diet changes; notes research which has shown that 30 mintues of daily exercise can halve the risk of syndrome X; believes that there is a lack of awareness over the importance of identifying and treating syndrome X; and urges the Government to commission research into this area and take steps to alert people to the dangers of syndrome X.
