Sugar: Pre-Diabetes (Impaired Glucose Tolerance (Idt))
EDM number 829 in 2002-03, proposed by David Tredinnick on 05/03/2003.
That this House observes that at least one in 10 Britons suffer from Impaired Glucose Tolerance, also known as pre-diabetes; notes that IGT is linked to a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates and that it impairs the ability of the pancreas to break down sugar into glucose the body needs for energy; further notes that experts view the condition as a time bomb because half of the people with IGT will develop Type II diabetes over the next five to 10 years and because it also increases the risk of heart disease by 50 per cent.; believes that most people have no idea that they have it because of the lack of awareness over the importance of identifying and treating IGT; and urges the Government to raise awareness and commission research into IGT.
