TEACHERS' COST OF LIVING ALLOWANCE
EDM number 715 in 2002-03, proposed by Kerry Pollard on 11/02/2003.
That this House acknowledges that the School Teacher Review Body's pay proposals for post-threshold teachers and head teachers in Inner London will benefit these teachers, but is concerned that such targeted increases may have a negative impact on the recruitment and retention of all other teachers working in schools in Inner and Outer London and the fringe areas; notes that there is a higher proportion of younger teachers yet to cross the threshold in London than elsewhere; recognises the lack of affordable accommodation across the whole of London and the fringe areas; and calls on the Government to recognise the necessity of providing equitable incentives for all teachers by paying them allowances comparable with other vital workers such as the police, and relative to the high cost of living in London and the fringe areas.
