Use Of The Veto In The Un Security Council
EDM number 706 in 2002-03, proposed by Neil Gerrard on 10/02/2003.
That this House notes that the Prime Minister has said that he and President Bush will not be bound by the unreasonable use of the veto by another country on a further resolution concerning Iraq at the United Nations Security Council; notes that within the Charter of the United Nations the veto is available to the five permanent members of the Security Council and that there is no provision for it to be ignored; and considers that claiming the right to ignore the veto if this would lead to an unacceptable outcome for the United Kingdom and United States Governments, whether such action is taken or not, undermines the United Nations and means that there is no reason for any other country on this or other issues in the future to respect the use of the veto by this country or the United States of America.
