Post Office Closures And The Jarrow Constituency

EDM number 695 in 2002-03, proposed by Stephen Hepburn on 10/02/2003.

That this House condemns the decision by Post Office Ltd. to close two sub-offices in 194 Bede Burn Road and 138 Hedgeley Road, in the Jarrow Parliamentary constituency; is concerned that many constituents of the honourable Member for Jarrow, and especially pensioners and families without their own cars, will now have to travel over a mile round trip to use post office facilities; urges the Government to prevent further blight on the post office network by strengthening the consultation process on the closure of post offices to ensure that decisions taken by Post Office Ltd. genuinely reflect the wishes of local people; and further urges the Government to invest more in the sub-post office network to ensure that there are proper numbers of sub-post offices remaining open so as to continue to serve local urban communities.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
