UK Civilian Peace Service
EDM number 538 in 2002-03, proposed by Mark Lazarowicz on 16/01/2003.
That this House supports the creation of a United Kingdom Civilian Peace Service to co-ordinate at a national level the recruitment, training and deployment of civilian personnel for conflict-prevention work abroad; notes that such a service already exists in several other European countries; and further notes that a Civilian Peace Service would enhance the efforts of non-governmental and inter-governmental organisations to prevent, manage and resolve violent conflict by enabling the training of civilian personnel to the highest standards in specific skills relevant to work in regions affected by conflict; and by allowing the management of a roster of skilled and qualified personnel available for those organisations to use in the field.
