LONDON BUS WORKERS' PAY
EDM number 482 in 2002-03, proposed by Jon Cruddas on 09/01/2003.
That this House expresses its strong concern at the erosion of London bus workers' pay and pensions since the introduction of competitive tendering and then privatisation; notes that London bus workers now earn an average of ú17,500 a year compared with the London average wage of ú34,762; further notes that London bus companies face a staffing crisis with a turnover of up to 40 per cent. per annum and a recruitment shortfall of over 1,000 bus workers; further notes that the necessary growth in London's public transport will come from the bus industry; and calls on the Government to hold urgent talks with the bus companies, the London Assembly, Transport for London and the unions to address the allocation of public money for London's buses and the bus tendering system to ensure the restoration of pay and pensions rights for all London's bus workers.
