Liberal Democrat Group Withdrawal For Hi-Tech Cctv System For Hull

EDM number 251 in 2002-03, proposed by Kevin McNamara on 02/12/2002.

That this House condemns the decision by the Liberal Democrat administration of Hull Council to withdraw support for the Community Safety Partnership's Metropolitan Area Network/Closed Circuit Television Project, which would deliver an initial network of 250 digital CCTV cameras citywide; further condemns the actions by the Liberal Democrat group to deny a council debate on this important project and to put on record their reasons for withdrawing support; recognises the positive impact this digital CCTV project has already had on reducing crime; notes that the proposed digital CCTV scheme is estimated to reduce crime by 30 per cent. and would bring huge benefits compared to the existing analogue CCTV system; expresses disappointment with the lack of action taken by the leader of Hull Council who seems satisfied to extend the existing analogue CCTV without specifying any fixed timescale despite opposition from Hull Community Safety Partnership and throughout Hull for this scheme; notes with concern that as a result of the actions of the Liberal Democrats a ú5 million Home Office grant may have to be returned; supports the recent motion by the Leader of the Labour Group urging the council to continue support for the citywide digital CCTV scheme; questions the commitment of the Liberal Democrat group to reduce crime in Hull; and notes with regret that this decision is preventing a world class, hi-tech CCTV system for Hull which would reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, a major concern to the people of Hull, who now feel badly let down.
