Cyprus And Un Peace Plan

EDM number 226 in 2002-03, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 27/11/2002.

That this House welcomes the fact that the Greek Cypriot leader, President Clerides, with the backing of the Republic of Cyprus National Council, has responded positively to UK General Secretary Kofi Annan's plan proposed to the two Cypriot leaders as a basis for a negotiated settlement of the 28 year old Cyprus problem; regrets that due to the illness of Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Denktash, time has been lost in the necessary negotiations to reach agreement; however notes that Mr Denktash apparently has also now indicated his willingness to negotiate on the basis of the UN Plan; notes that on 27th November 20,000 Turkish Cypriots demonstrated in Nicosia in support of a settlement; urges the two communities in Cyprus to negotiate positively so that final agreement can be reached by the Athens Summit on 16th April when the EU Accession Treaty is due for signature; but in any case believes that the Copenhagen Council meeting on 12th and 13th December should agree to admit Cyprus without any qualification in the interests of all Cypriots, and welcomes the constructive work of Her Majesty's Government, as a guarantor power, to this end.

This motion has been signed by a total of 33 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
