Car Crime
EDM number 213 in 2002-03, proposed by Gregory Campbell on 27/11/2002.
That this House recognises the grief suffered by the victims of car crime; acknowledges that inadequate penalities are imposed on those involved in car crime; and calls for a change in legislation to impose mandatory life sentences for causing death by dangerous driving by car thieves, for tougher penalties for 'being carried' to reflect their role as accessories, for allocation of adequate resources to communities most affected by car crime to be aimed at diversionary or preventative measures in consultation with relevant agencies and local communities, for a review of youth provision by education authorities to take account of the changing needs of young people and for the implementation of a curriculum-based schools campaign highlighting the devasting consequences of car crime.
