EDM number 1910 in 2002-03, proposed by Marion Roe on 12/11/2003.
That this House recognises that violence against women violates, impairs or nullifies women's human rights and fundamental freedoms; joins in marking 25th November the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women; recognises the White Ribbon as the international symbol for a world where women and girls can live free from the fear of violence; supports the work of the UK and international NGOs, including WOMANKIND Worldwide, to raise funds and awareness to end violence against women; notes with alarm the prevalence and gravity of violence against women, with one in four women in the UK suffering domestic violence at some point in their lives, one in 20 women being raped, and at least one in every three women around the world being beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in some other way; and calls on the UK Government to develop and resource a national strategy on violence against women, including legislative responses to all forms of violence against women, education for young people and the raising of public awareness.
