40th Anniversary Of Dr Who
EDM number 1906 in 2002-03, proposed by Bob Russell on 11/11/2003.
That this House joins the celebrations to mark the 40th Anniversary of the first broadcast on 23rd November 1963 of the internationally acclaimed BBC Television series Dr Who, the longest-running science fiction series in the World; regrets, however, that the series was terminated, although not exterminated in 1989, and would welcome the resumption of new programmes; notes that throughout its 27-year United Kingdom broadcasting history Dr Who attracted average audiences of more than nine million, achieving a peak of 16 million viewers; further notes that episodes have been shown in 60 countries ranging from Abu Dhabi to Zimbabwe, with a worldwide audience in its heyday of more than 110 million; is delighted that episodes of this cult series continue to be shown, notably on UK Gold, and is still winning awards; pays tribute to all involved in the production of Dr Who over the years; and congratulates BBC Worldwide for producing a range of unique memorabilia to commemorate the 40th Anniversary.
