State Of Emergency In Sri Lanka

EDM number 1876 in 2002-03, proposed by Barry Gardiner on 05/11/2003.

That this House expresses its profound concern at President Kumaratsunga's action to declare a state of emergency and order the military on to the streets of Colombo at a time when Prime Minister Wickeransingha is on an official visit to the United States; regrets the sacking by her of the three ministers who have been involved in the peace negotiations with the Liberation Tamil Tigers Eelam; and welcomes the proposals put forward by the LTTE for the establishment of an interim authority in the North and East of Sri Lanka as a basis for constructive negotiations towards a peaceful resolution of this historic conflict.
