Elstree Film Studios
EDM number 1810 in 2002-03, proposed by Kerry Pollard on 27/10/2003.
That this House notes the continuing success of Elstree Film Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire with major television series such as Big Brother and Who Wants to be a Millionaire based there, and international stars making films such as the recent Vanity Fair and a film about the life of Cole Porter; further notes that these studios launched the careers of Alfred Hitchcock, Stewart Granger, Vivien Leigh and Audrey Hepburn amongst many others; recognises the importance of the studios to British history as the location of the first British talkie, the first British colour musical and the first use of Dolby sound, amongst other technical achievements; further recognises the contribution of the highly skilled technical work force in attracting overseas film makers to make films such as Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan and the Indiana Jones trilogy; commends the work of the Save Our Studios campaign, in existence since 1988 with active support from Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas and Lord Attenborough; and calls upon the Government to take steps to protect this site of major historic importance for future generations by preventing its sale and re-development for purposes other than film making.
