Speed Awareness Courses And National Review Of Speed Limits
EDM number 1796 in 2002-03, proposed by Martyn Jones on 22/10/2003.
That this House recognises that inappropriate speed remains a contributory factor in many road traffic accidents and is also a large contributor to pedestrian casualties; supports the call by the Chairman of the Road Policing Committee of the Association of Chief Police Officers to extend across the country the introduction of self-funding speed awareness courses for minor speeding offenders; believes that this alternative to prosecution would have a more beneficial effect on drivers by educating them on the dangers of excessive speed, improving their driving skills and maintaining good relations between the police and public; and calls on the Government to undertake a long overdue nationwide review of all speed limits as a way of maintaining public support for safer and shower driving in areas where it is necessary.
