Conservative Party Views On Europe

EDM number 1559 in 2002-03, proposed by Chris Bryant on 08/07/2003.

That this House notes that the Right honourable Member for Chingford has announced that he will outline his vision of the future structure of the European Union in Prague on 10th July; further notes that the Right honourable Member's statements of support for Britain's membership of the European Union will ring hollow unless he takes action against those members of the Conservative Party who are actively campaigning for a 'no' vote in Estonia's forthcoming referendum on entry to the European Union; observes that the operation of the single market and the enforcement of the EU's robust Competition and State Aid law are dependent upon the primacy of European law as already embodied in the European Union Treaties and reiterated in the draft European Union Constitutional Treaty; remarks that the ability of citizens, governments and companies to challenge European Union actions in court is similarly dependent on the concept of a legal personality for the European Union; recognises that the limited extensions to qualified majority voting proposed in the Convention are essential if a European Union of 25 member states is to function efficiently, effectively and in the interests of the citizens of Europe; and calls on the Right honourable Member for Chingford to condemn inconsistent, dogmatic and irrational political posturing which is against the national interest.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
