That this House accepts that the best public policy is grounded in an understanding of people and their social and economic needs and behaviour; notes the value of independent economic and social science research in formulating public policy; welcomes the opportunity, afforded by the Economic and Social Research Council, for social scientists and opinion formers in national and local government, business and the voluntary sector to share their respective knowledge and experiences of project-based research and policy formulation; and calls on the Government to use Social Science Week, 23rd to 27th June, as an opportunity to better link the detailed work produced by academic research with the practical work of public policy-making.
