G8 Meeting At Evian
EDM number 1352 in 2002-03, proposed by Jenny Tonge on 05/06/2003.
That this House regards the G8 meeting at Evian as a missed opportunity; notes the failure of the leaders of the world's leading industrialised nations to make any meaningful progress on the very issues which blight the lives of the world's poorest people; further notes that the Prime Minister failed to support the French initiative to suspend subsidies on agricultural exports to Africa if the US did the same; notes the lack of progress in enabling African countries to import, manufacture or distribute cheap drugs to those suffering from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; further notes that these and other infectious diseases will kill a total of 14 million people this year; and regards the fact that the extra assistance offered following the meeting at Evian is less than one per cent. of the money spent on the war on Iraq as completely unacceptable.
