4x4 Vehicles
EDM number 1341 in 2002-03, proposed by Norman Baker on 04/06/2003.
That this House notes that increasing numbers of 4x4 vehicles are being used in towns and cities for short journeys to local schools or supermarkets; also notes that whilst drivers of 4x4 vehicles may feel safer, other road users outside the vehicles often feel intimidated and less safe, particularly cyclists and pedestrians but also other car users; expresses concern that their vehicles with their poor fuel efficiency, sometimes as low as 20 mpg, large engines and emission levels leave a significantly greater footprint on the environment than the average car; and calls on motor manufactuers to redirect their marketing strategies to legitimate and largely rural uses instead of attempting to create status symbols by targeting the urban jungle and those within it.
This motion has been signed by a total of 29 MPs.
