Financial Disparity In Football
EDM number 766 in 2001-02, proposed by Bob Russell on 30/01/2002.
That this House views with great concern the increasing financial disparity in football between the richest clubs in the premiership and clubs playing in the lower divisions; recognises the vital social and economic role that all football clubs and particularly smaller clubs, for example Colchester United and Torquay United, play within the local community; commends the work that organisations including Supporters Direct play in assisting local supporter clubs to take ownership and rescue their own clubs from extinction, for example by using the trust model as at Chesterfield; notes with concern the present financial difficulties being experienced at York City Football Club; welcomes and applauds the strong efforts being made in York by supporters to develop a rescue plan and take ownership of the club; and calls on all associated with football to place great effort on ensuring the survival of league football at York, coupled with support for other clubs experiencing financial problems.
