ENCOURAGING EXCELLENCE IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

EDM number 723 in 2001-02, proposed by Simon Thomas on 24/01/2002.

That this House congratulates Philip Pullman on winning the Whitbread Prize for literature for his book, 'The Amber Spyglass'; believes that his 'Dark Materials' trilogy of which it forms part, is a major achievement in children's and young people's literature; and hopes that his success will encourage authors,librarians, teachers and all others who inspire and teach young people to ensure that they get every opportunity to read the best writing possible.
