Nec Job Losses
EDM number 605 in 2001-02, proposed by John Barrett on 18/12/2001.
That this House notes with concern the decision of electronics firm, NEC, to close its plant at Livingston by March 2002 and to make its full 1,260 workforce redundant; further notes that this announcement will come as a devastating blow to the workers of the plant, especially in the run up to Christmas and that the news will be deeply disappointing to the entire West Lothian area, still recovering from a series of recent job cut announcements, including the loss of 3,000 jobs at Motorola in Bathgate and 800 jobs at Continental Tyres in Newbridge; and calls on West Lothian Council officials, Ministers from the Scottish Executive and Scotland Office to work closely with the management of NEC, to investigate any possible future for the plant and to ensure that every action is taken to assist those who are made redundant to find alternative employment.
