CITY TITLE TO COMMEMORATE HM THE QUEEN'S GOLDEN JUBILEE

EDM number 6 in 2001-02, proposed by Bob Russell on 20/06/2001.

That this House welcomes the proposal that at least one town should be awarded the title of city to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; believes that this should be bestowed on Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town and the first capital of Roman Britain; notes that today it is the only one of the four British cities from the Roman period which no longer uses the title, such usage being lost in the mist of time; and considers that it would be appropriate if this historic anomaly was corrected by conferring a new charter restoring city status on the royal town of Colchester.
